Welcome to the introductory guide for AuroraMUSH. If you're new to all this. then this is the best place to start. From here, you can find out the basics of communication, and a guide to Character Generation(chargen).
Connecting to the MUSH
When you first connect, you are presented with the MUSH login screen. This is basically where you input information about your character, either creating a new one, connecting as a guest, or connecting as an existing character.
connect guest
This will connect you to the guest character, so you can have a look around the place.
create NewChar mypassword
This will create a new character. NewChar can be replaced with the name of a character that you decide to use, and mypassword can be replaced with a password. Pick something that you will remember!
connect MyChar mypassword
This connects to a previously existing character, called MyChar, password mypassword.
Connecting as a guest
When you connect as a guest, you are presented with a series of simple questions, so that the MUSH can tell what type of computer you are connecting from.
Firstly, it will present a line of colour to you. If you can see the colour, type in yes, otherwise, type no. Then, it will ask what sex you are. If you are male, type male, if you are female, type female, if you do not wish to disclose your sex (or are unsure :) type N, and if you want to be plural (?) type plural.
Next, there is a newbie trail that you can follow... if you are new to MUSHes in general then it's a good idea.... when it asks you, type yes. Otherwise, if you've done this before, then feel free to go directly to the Northern Lights(the central part of AuroraMUSH) by answering no.
Creating a new character
This is similar to connecting as a guest, the only difference being that you have to think up a description for yourself. Also, you have to seek residency so that your character is saved for the next time you connect.
Answer the questions that it presents you.. it asks information about whether you can see colour or not, and what sex you are. After that, you are teleported to chargen(character generation)
Chargen is where you can set up your character by giving it a description. This is what people will see if they look at you, which is described later in this guide. For now though, you need to have a description.
Giving your character a description This is fairly simple to do. All you have to type is something short, it doesn't have to be a literary masterpiece, although some residents have descriptions of over a page in length.. (!)
To put in your description :
@desc me=[your description]
For example :
@desc me=A tall man, with dark hair and brown eyes.
Obviously, you can do better than that. *grin*
Setting an email address You need to set an email address before you can be given residency. To do it, type:
email [your email address]
Again, for example....
email soruk@eridani.demon.co.uk
Reading the rules And, last, but most definitely not least, you gotta read the rules of the place.
Type: news rules
then: news rules2
and finally: news rules3
Once you've got that lot over and done with, you need to find someone that can grant you residency. You need to type +who. The people who can give you residency have a star beside their name, in yellow if you have a colour screen. Unless someone has offered help already, you can contact a person on that list using :
page [person] = Hi, can you give me residency?
For example, if you see Percible, then you might try :
page percible = Hi, can you give me residency?
Abbreviations of names usually work too. You could use page perc= instead, and it would work just the same. If you've had any problems with any of the stages above, then feel free to ask.
Connecting to an existing character
Once you connect, you'll be automatically returned to the MUSH in the place where you left it last.
Communication basics
You have to be able to talk to people. If not, why are you here? :) There are different ways of talking to people, and so different commands for each. As this is a basic guide, there is just a list of commands with a brief explaination of each.
Room communication When you type look, you are given a list of people and objects in the room. To communicate with them, use these commands. (substitute yourname for, um, your name *grin*)
"hello Output : yourname says "hello".
:waves. Output : yourname waves.
Simple.
Channel communications. There are several 'channels' that you can talk on.... this is similar to CB radio, where you can talk to several other people, but they don't have to be in the same room. When you first connect to the MUSH, you are on one channel, the Public channel. I'll show you examples of talking on this channel.
pub hello [Public] yourname says "hello"
pub :waves. [Public] yourname waves.
You can also turn output from the public channel on and off.
pub off
pub onPrivate communications You can also talk directly to another person who is in a different room as you.
page person=hello You get "You paged person with 'hello'."
person gets "yourname pages: hello"
page person=:waves. You get "Long distance to person: Yourname waves."
person gets "From afar, Yourname waves."
Finally With this basic information, you're pretty much ready to have a go. If you get stuck, then please, ask for help... we won't bite(unless you ask real nice ;)
